  1. Postcard pitch: The Night Mare

Four months; has it really been that long? I just have so many things going on I just leave things be! Oh well, here's another "postcard pitch" for another fantasy epic that I started writing for Nanowrimo's online Novel In A Month challenge. I succeeded in reaching the word limit too! 11-year-old Robyn has a life to be envied; caring parents who live in and run a stable, a horse of her own named Willow and plenty of friends at school. Yet that life ends abruptly when she is whisked...
  2. A Magical Heroine and her Sidekick

Again, I may use these characters or I may not. Ophidia, the Red Witch Sandra Egillsen is a sable and a popular stage magician... to the world at large. In secret, she is a member of the Shreelander Fraternity, who are responsible for regulating supernatural events and the use of magic on Aurah. Her father Torvald is head of the mystical Order of Broagard and taught her her true magical talents. He was never comfortable with her helping Kay fight crime, but cannot deny the good she...
  3. Unofficial Powers

Two other kinds of super-anthro exist in Aurah, although the Millward Scale does not cover them. Technological heroes/villains are anthros who can create and use technology well in advance of extant science. It is not yet decided if this is a superpower or merely naturally advanced intellect. Then there are the so-called "magic" supers whose abilities follow no accepted scientific basis, but can be documented according to folklore.
  4. What Powers Are There?

Here are some of the official labels for certain anthro's powers in Aurah; Colossus Individual possessing immense strength and athleticism. Resilient Less vulnerable to damage or physical strain; useful in a colossus. Holistic Can communicate with and/or command lower life forms. Hybrid Possesses abilities from another species or an enhancement of their natural abilities. Cerebral Mental powers. Energetic Manipulates or generates energy using own body. Hypersensitive Enhanced...
  5. The Millward Scale; How to Measure Supers' Powers

This was an arbitrary standard scale proposed by Dr Wilfred Millward to help categorise the strength and type of power an anthro exhibits. He proposed it just as superanthros became emergent in the Second Great Auran War. It puts supers into five separate categories, as follows; Class 0 An ordinary anthro; no exceptional abilities or ones that could become emergent without rigorous practice. Class 1 Relatively minor abilities, such as an additional sense, a particularly advanced...
  6. Another hero

This is a hero I may use, or may not. Pocus Thomas Wildwood (European badger) was an unpopular child at school and as many of them are wont to do, he retreated into the world of his imagination. He read widely and developed an exceptional imagination. As he reached adulthood, he discovered a latent superpower; the ability to generate illusions and shape fluids to anything his will demands. Training himself up physically and mentally, he joined the ranks of the supers but has...
  7. How Did the Races Establish Peace?

10,000 years ago on Aurah, when humans and the lesser anthro races had mostly faded into history, herbivorous and carnivorous castes existed in widely dispersed settlements, sometimes in cave systems and sometimes in crude dwellings. Herbivores' settlements were not often well-defended and could be easily sacked by carnivore tribes if they came into close contact. It seemed that carnivores might prevail for a while. Ingenuity was what saved the herbivores and ultimately allowed them to...
  8. What Happened to the Humans?

20,000 years ago, humans lived everywhere on Aurah. Land bridges allowed them to move virtually anywhere. Then a massive radiation burst from Theta Proxima merged their DNA with the animals they came into contact with, particularly those they ate as food or used for furs and bone tools. At first the human reaction was hostile. Tribes either slaughtered their altered babies the moment they came into the world, or made them live as outcasts. Yet over three or four generations, with most...
  9. The Origin of the Supers and the Super-Standoff

In the same year that the Second Great Aurahn War started, the star Theta Proxima went through a burst of activity. Its effect on Aurah was to give certain anthroes fantastic abilities, which the warring factions were quick to exploit. North Vlaksgard led the way in "weaponising" its supers and finding out their secrets. Their brutal system of imprisoning and even killing supposed undesirables gave them many test subjects, unwilling as they were to acquiesce. From these subjects they...
  10. Geography; The Umtangan Zone

During the Second Great Aurahn War, the great Inannan nation of Umtanga landed many troops in Western Demeta, to wrest it back from the North Vlaksgarders. After the War, they maintained these nations as satellites, ostensibly to discourage Violan or Gallish incursion towards their lands. They had never trusted these powers, though they had collaborated in order to bring down their common enemy. Southerly Iratoula was the only nation that successfully resisted the Umtangan reforms. The...
  11. A Major Famous Anthro

Admiral Lepsidon 120 years ago, the Violan Civil War cost thousands of lives as the SNV (States of North Viola) tried to subdue separatists who wanted to establish a new nation, the IRVS (Independent Republic of Violan States) in the south of the country. The southern states were slowly but surely subdued and for more than 30 years, the country healed its wounds and by and large, the two sides grew to trust each other once more. Then came Admiral Lepsidon. He was an American badger by...
  12. Where Are The Humans?

In Kay Pow's world, anthros emerged when humans' DNA merged with the animals they used for food, clothing and other functions. But what happened to the humans themselves? Here's a brief history. 20,000 years ago on Aurah, the world was much the same as it was on Earth during the last Ice Age. Land bridges linked many continents and modern humans had spread over most of the globe. Then a great pulse of energy from the Forest Star, Theta Proxima, hybridised them with animals they were...
  13. Some Famous Anthros

Nicholas Stratshire Also known as "The Scribe." A playwright and poet from the isles of Gallion; arguably the greatest literary mind in Aurahn history. Although his works are endlessly performed and re-interpreted, some sceptics believe that his genius was in fact that of his great friend and collaborator, Gregory Dudley. Species; beaver. Shirley Bosworth Another great literary mind, she began by publishing under the pen name Boris Worthing. She was a childhood friend of sisters...
  14. The Sciences in Kay's World

Biology is a far more important science on Aurah than in our world. It has made advances that have greatly benefitted the anthros and ensured continued sustainable development. Sensitive anthro noses could not tolerate the large scale burning of coal and oil in the early industrialisation of Aurah. A viable alternative was found in the extraction of odourless methane from waste. The discovery of electricity brought with it electrical vehicles and trains that filled the cities and gave...
  15. The DREA's; enforcing the supers

Not all regular anthros trust the supers. Hardly surprising given that they have abilities that can be extremely dangerous if misused. That was why Aurah's scientific and defence communities collaborated to produce the DREA; the Defence, Restraint and Enforcement Automat. (Automat is the Aurahn's term for a robot, which substituted the old term because it implied forced labour.) All DREA's have the same basic shape; a squat cube or pyramid surmounted by a dome or pyramid containing...
