Kay Pow is a red squirrel who has styled herself as an unofficial crime-fighter. By night, she dons her black gown and hood, blending in with the shadows or perching high above Havenburg, striking hard and fast at wrong-doers. The dark pink belt about her waist contains all sorts of devices that help her to fight opponents, climb, escape detection, seek out criminals or hunt for clues. In case of an attack, a bulletproof jerkin protects her under her gown and hood. The folds of her costume may become rigid and act like wings to help her glide. An extension on her tail helps her steer as she drops to the ground.
Kay's real name is Sylvia Nuttall, owner and operator of Acer Fitness Centre, a large and very popular gym in the borough of Ostovia. Her father was Peter Nuttall, multi-millionaire head of Nuttall Engineering Industries and noted philanthropist. When Sylvia was a teenager, her family fell on hard times when her father's business partner, defence contractor Gerard Wynham, was shot dead. He had recently been exposed as techno-hero Steelhoof and it was believed a rising criminal murdered him in revenge. Wynham's company fell, dragging Nuttall's firm with it. Sylvia came home one day to find her father overdosing on medication. He died as a result, and Sylvia's mother Beatrice suffered a mental collapse. The path of Sylvia's life was changed forever. Training herself up and making use of her father's remaining money, she became Kay Pow.
