Tales of Aphal: Ascension to Empire

The Unitine Empire, truly the
shining jewel of Aphal.
Founded by midlon, son of Centinuus in the second age of men, it stands as the largest organized military and collection of settlements for the last 700 years.
The events that occurred during the first age culminating in the catastrophic earth wipe had left the races of men divided and without the aid of the mighty grand spirits or of Allunas himself who had seeped into the cracks of the world.
The mysterious age that evades the records of time is known as the Age of Desolation and Ruination, the time when mankind was establishing itself even as basic settlements and colonies across the mainland continent, establishing their unique cultures whilst cut off from one another during the 2nd Age of men. And when Allunas contacted the 5 brothers of Nexun and sent them on their journey to find the lost heir of Centinuus, named Midlon.
so began the Third Age of Men.
Midlon used his newfound heritage to build his homeland of Skysplint into the mightiest of the colonies of man, naming himself a lowly lord of the land.
He proceeded to annex the nearby Gailenfall, who put up an initial resistance to their expansion, but upon understanding the free policies to continue their worship of Linun, and respecting Midlons right to rule as heir of Centinuus they joined the first union of the new age. Midon however had a vision of a unified Aphal all following one banner.
He established a colony south of the mighty Lyans Lake and declared the land WaveHaven, this settlement established the beginnings of the Unitine Empire, and its complete control over the southern part of the continent.
Meanwhile, far to the north, a small settlement on a isle of the Northeast coast began an expansion of its own, establishing a smaller town on the mainland and mustering up a military force to begin there invasion of the nearby Arloche.
The newly expanding force known as the Ustagrad Barbarians led by Barbus Ragnoruk attempted not to unify the world, but to swiftly conquer it before a ruling power had been established.
They laid siege upon Arloche, fighting an uphill battle against the mountaintop fortress of a city. But with sear ferocity and fury Ustagrad pushed through and took the city.
The brother of the lord of Arloche, Grymore, had herd of Arloches capture and led his forces on a march north from his kingdom of Rockholm.
While Grymore managed to retake Arloche from Ustagrad, it left Rockholm open to subjugation into the rising Unitine Empire.
If not for the absence of Grymore, Rockholm would not have fallen, and its fortified city made an excellent addition to Unitine, who installed the new ruling line of lords into the city.
To the near north, the religious rival nations Graygust and Lunareach had been in war over the control of the looming Lumpas Volcano, unfortunately for Lunareach however, Ustagrad swept down from the north while they were vulnerable and brought the lords of Lunareach to their knees, while Graygust took control of the mountain.
Meanwhile Grymore returned to attempt to retake Rockholm, which failed to the dismay of the mountain folk.
With this window Ustagrad retook Arloche and used these new footholds in Lunareach and Arloche to take the well equipped Graygust in a swift conquest, giving them complete control of the northern Aphal.
And so the stage was set for the clash between the southern dominating Unitine Empire and the Conquest of Ustagrad in the north.
Led by Barbos Ragnorok himself, the Ustagrad barbarians launched an all out assault on Skysplint in an attempt to destroy the head of Unitine and absorb the remaining colonies.
While Midlon defended his homeland, his generals also led a flank up the northern reaches of Rockholm, and managed to draw out Ustagrads forces in Graygust and push them out of the area.
The might of the Unitine Empire had not been seen by Lunareach and Graygust, and they banded together for the first time and joined them in a attempt to eradicate the barbarians of Ustagrad once and for all.
The Lunareach lord Sharzin managed to inspire his people to drive out the Ustagrad oppressors and aid in the reclamation of Arloche with Graygust.
Ustagrad had now been Extinguished as quickly as it had began and the last remnants had been pushed back into the WorldFang mountain next to Skysplint, where Barbus and his people would live in caves until Midlon cleared them out as well.
Now at last the Unitine Empire had reunited and bound the lost colonies and factions of Aphal under the banner of a single empire.
Midlon organized his empire so it would be easier to manage in several brilliant fashions.
Firstly he divided the 7 established kingdoms of mankind into the 7 provinces giving them respective land claims and appointed lords to maintains whatever cultures they had established for themselves, and a certain amount of land to cultivate, naming them after the Capitols that shaped them.
Skysplint, which stood as the political capitol of the entire Empire housed the newly appointed Antasia as its capitol city, and sat comfortably in a center of the empire, surrounded on all sides with the other provinces.
Rochholm which was dominated by eastern deserts and western mountains possessed a certain lifestyle few but the local mountainfolk could endure, and its capitol Grayle stood as an enormous mining industry and the old and weary Grymore established a code of laws that would be used throughout the empire.
Graygust, with its exotic landscape and fruitful harvest’s became an agricultural standard for the Empire, growing its religious practices of worshiping the spirit Lanan for his gifts of mankind, valuing men above all other things on Aphal with the capitol, Candlilly, having a massive temple tower devoted to him.
Lunareach was also very religious province, worshiping the spirit Lunan and placing a high respect for nature and Aphal as a whole, there strange desert the floatstone plains held oddly magnetized floating stones to add to the strange geography of the land. There capitol Searshall was on the shores of the massive Tidetaker Bay.
Arloche dominated the northern rim of the continent, and stood as a place of rich culture despite the blows they had taken in the Age thus far. A very merry and inclined people, they thrived in taking their frozen barren land and doing what they could with it. There capitol of Grugun sat perched atop mount Grugun which it was named after.
Wavehaven spanned the open southern coast of the land, having the Lyans Lake and Mankaran Sea bordering its capitol Humbart. It exported many of the fish and maritime goods throughout the empire.
And GailenFall which was the smallest of the 7, but still held advancing claims in the swaps of Gai and up to the gem laced highlands of Worldfang Mountain. The dominant religion left by their ancestors left them upholds the unpopular worship of Linun, creator of the beasts and more importantly, the Wyverns. There capitol of Exeeva would be a place of dispute in years to come.
And so the 7 provinces of the fully explored and cartographed continent (which was dubbed by Midlon as Centinaal.) had been established.
The second objective of Midlon organization was to collect and rally the Empires armies to be better adapted to deal with conflicts that may arise within the Empire.
He divided the military forces into the 5 Legions of Unitine. Each had upwards of 500 men and was divided further for systematic elimination of threats.
2500 men in the 5 Legions
500 men per Legion
9 squads of 50 Footsolider’s
9 Arks, or captains, 1 per squad
1 Primeark who commands the whole legion.
The 6th Legion which was technically not part of the army consisted of specialists and reserves.
Now that Midlons Empire was unified and managed by the lords that all owed their loyalty to him, he could finally oversee it all through the eyes of an Emperor.
The first conflict that arose within the new perfect Empire after what had seem like ages of peace began in Gailenfall, when the lord of the province, Yogriff who was a devout believer in Linun and his worthiness as a Spirit (which made him quite an outcast in the council of lords)
Decided that to redeem Linun in the eyes of the other provinces he would lead the followers of Linun on a pilgrimage far to the west to the Stonestaln chain, where the dead Spirit lay in an attempt to communicate with him and restore his honor.
And so Yogriff left Gailenfall with his people, and they arrived at Stonestaln, delving deep into the catacombs of Linuns Scar Caverns.
Eventually they found a direct connection in the form of a open crack in the deep rock that exposed the remnant of the spirit himself. Yogriff talked to Linun then, and while Linun admired their efforts and devotion but was utterly powerless to do anything directly physical to affect how the people of the world saw him.
He did however; offer Yogriff a blessing with what little strength he had, giving them the raw strength of a beast while still keeping most of their human appearance.
Yogriff and his people accepted, and so in the depths of Linuns Scar, the LinunKin were born. While maintaining the advanced designed shape of a human, their skin had become pigmented a bizarre green hue, and they had been given large twisting horns for a natural edge in combat.
They became much more physical inclined as well, possessing greater stamina and power. While it it’s generally accepted that the LininKin sacrificed intelligence as a penalty for these benefits, it has been shown that trimming one of the horns can mostly restore it.
They emerged from the Scar expecting to be looked upon with envy from the other races of men, but as they met with the council of lords to discuss the implications of this new blessing, they were stunned to find that the others saw this only as a curse, and fatherly a disgrace to Lanan’s creation of men.
Yogriff and the Linunkin where banished for their impertinence to the ruins of Ustagrad on the island of Gravemund, forever forbidden to intermingle with the other factions of mankind.
The town of Whitewood was established to guard the bridge between Arloche and Gravemund. Also however, within the years since the Empire had been established, 2 Citys, each with a respective Baron and both of whom resided within the borders of the main province Skysplint, began a long ill blooded dispute over which of them would claim lordship over Exeeva and who would absorb the bits of land that could no longer be used by Gailenfall, eventually Midlon placed a council of representatives from both cities, Imro and Smana, as well as ambassadors from the Imperial capitol Antasia. This would not stop the feuding however and Imro and Smana would be locked in a bitter dispute for hundreds of years.
After the new blow to Gailenfall however, great benefits and new discoverys were uncovered across the Empire by brave adventurers seeking to find the remnants and relics of the first age.
Artillius Magus, a local cobbler and tailor in the city of Newell who had left that life in search of ruins and old treasures one day discovered a small passage in the Floatstone Desert, at the base of white sands.
After a bit of excavating, he proceeded to explore the unearthed catacombs of an ancient temple of the first age of men. In it, he found the almighty runes, transcribed from Centinuus himself as a way to control and mimic the power to create matter using the body’s energy alone.
Artillius began to record and study the elements of these runes, discovering and unlocking many unique possibilities.
The ability to summon the elements of matter to your own will was an incredible power, even on a small scale, and Artillius saw the remarkable potential. He converted the ruins into the Magus Embassy and opened it for all of those who would wish to study and reflect upon the runic Alphabet.
The practice of summoning matter and studying the runes would become known as “Magus” and practitioners “Mages” and as the age would progress, more and more people would make the journey to Floatstone to become a talented Mage.
This new profound fascination in a particular area of study opened the possibilities for new guilds and sects to form, allowing all forms of enthusiasts to participate in what they enjoyed.
Several new groups included the White Eyes Assassination guild, the SwiftWind Rangers guild, the smith’s guild and many more.
Now with artisans and experts of their crafts roaming and exploring the land, it did not take long for the fully cartographer continent to be truly uncovered.
At the dawning of the Third age of man, Midlon looked upon his new empire with utter bliss as he had fulfilled his vision of a unified and collected empire.
So end’s Third Age of Man a Age of Unity and Order
The Division of the Legions and the third Age
The dawning of the Third age left a resonating peace and feeling of purpose within the overarching machine that was the Unitine Empire.
The coming years however, and Midlons waning health would lead to a quick lax of the Legions of Imperial soldiers, leading to several conflicts arriving during the age.
