    [Reading Group] July 2014 Nominations/Voting

I'm in an anthology that's out in a few days. ;) Seriously, though, I'm going to pass on July. I've had my Hugo packet through, and I want to read as much as I can of it before the voting deadline. (Need to check when that is...)

[Reading Group] SPOILERS June 2014: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

LOL! Sorry, Ophiucha. One of those broad generalisations, like Londoners are rude and Scots are mean. I've probably just seen too many American sit-coms where they all have the quick comebacks! ;) So far I'm liking the relationship with the Nick and Margo best, as they seem more honest with...

[Reading Group] SPOILERS June 2014: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I'm somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the way through (they have gone to the abandoned mall at night time, and the guy has recognised the picture of Amy). I struggled a little with the beginning, as I wasn't getting on with the relentless snark and clever comments/allusions. Then last night I...

[Reading Group] SPOILERS June 2014: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I've only got to the bit where he gets home and she's gone, so I'm trailing behind as usual.

    University during the Renaissance

I'm no historian, but I've been reading a bit about the Renaissance recently. I've turned up some websites that might be of use Medieval university - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Education History: VIII EDUCATION DURING THE RENAISSANCE Renaissance Education ×÷ÕߣºÕæÅóÓÑ...

New SciFi/Fantasy Anthology Released June 1st!

I'm in it too! Publication has been pushed back a little, to the 17th, but it's all looking good. There's a launch party on Facebook for it with giveaways and so on, but it's RS McCoy who knows all about that. If anyone runs a book blog/review site, we have ARCs available (just mobi format at...

How would a matriarchal society look like?

Also bear in mind that there's a difference between matriarchal and matrilineal. A matriarchy can be matrilineal or patrilineal.

[Reading Group] SPOILERS June 2014: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

It was a Kickstarter a few weeks ago. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stlhood/storium-the-online-storytelling-game There are two videos on there that give a flavour of it. It's sort of a cross between an RPG and collaborative storytelling, and I'm totally hooked. I'm in three games. One...

[Reading Group] SPOILERS June 2014: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I've all but stopped reading for the past few days, since I discovered the lures of Storium. I really must get back to it...

    Is your MC a killer?

I deliberately made my MC come from a people who don't use weapons. I wanted to see how he'd manage in a fantasy environment, because let's face it, some fantasy stories are quite brutal. He ended up in a kill or be killed situation, and yes, he killed. It haunts him. He now knows he's capable...

I've been using the coffee shop one for 3 or 4 days now, and I'm finally making progress with my editing at last. Thank you.

[Reading Group] SPOILERS June 2014: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I'm just finishing off a couple of other books I've got on the go (not Name of the Wind, for now) and then I'll get onto this one. It's borrowed from a friend and I've had it for months, so I really need to get it back to her!

[Reading Group] May 2014: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Don't look now, Philip, but I think we might just have agreed on a book. Or at least, as close as makes no odds. ;)

[Reading Group] May 2014: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

You see, with Stormlight Archive I'm gripped in a way I'm not with Name of the Wind. It's a different sort of world than I've seen before. In terms of prose, Rothfuss wins, but in terms of keeping me coming back for more, Sanderson has it nailed.

[Reading Group] May 2014: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

I've got halfway through and I've set it aside for now. I'll go back to it, but it's not holding my attention. I've picked up another couple of books and once I've finished them I'll read Gone Girl, then I'll probably go back to this one. I'll maybe skip the July book to get this finished up...
