I recently finished Gardens of the Moon as an audio book and in the beginning I found myself re-listening to parts again and again trying to get things straight in my head and also because I found myself just tuning out. I did stick with it though and when I'd finished the book I knew I'd be...
I couldn't agree more. I get why it's a thing in fanfiction, but the idea that artists can't desire money always annoys me. As does the idea that the only real writers are the ones who do it as a compulsion that they can't control. John Scalzi had a great post on this a while back: A Moment of...
My writing is currently split between working on short stories that usually fall under the speculative fiction umbrella, which I usually send out to collect rejections, and a serial that is a collection of fantasy stories which share a setting (in both time and place). I made a post about the...
Personally, if it's a compulsion for you I'd say that qualifies as a vocation. Also, apologies to everyone for the poorly worded last choice. My grammar got away from me there a bit. It was intended to say more clearly that it is a vocation that you are either making money doing currently, or...
See now, maybe I'm weird, but while I do almost all of my writing, and especially first drafts, on the computer I really like, whenever possible, to do at least one edit pass with printouts and a pencil in my hand sitting comfortably somewhere away from the computer.
So I'm curious about the role writing takes on in your life as individuals and the overall makeup of the Mythic Scribes community through the lens of this question.
Is writing your hobby? You Part-time job? Your Full-time job? Do you consider it a vocation? If it's a vocation are you trying...
Hello and welcome! I have to say, being still pretty new here myself that there is a lot to poke your nose into here. I've barely scratched the surface myself.
Hello Foah. I have to say as both an ESL teacher and an avid reader that your English certainly looks good enough to me! If you don't mind a suggestion I'd say dive in and start writing. Don't let any fear hold you back, and remember that even the best native English speaking authors in the...
Hello! I gotta say, being able to say you were once a full-time butcher is the kind of factoid fans and interviews will love to bring up about you if you achieve your dream of being a published, working author.
Hi and Welcome. At 22 your still way ahead of me for when I finally decide I was going to give writing a serious go. About a decade actually. Seeing how much I've learned and improved in my first year and a bit of really trying I wish I had started years and years ago. So come on in, grab a...
I wrote a scene once when I was well and truly drunk not long ago. Came home from a rare night out and remembered I hadn't written any words that day and I was on a streak. So I sat down and wrote until I found myself falling asleep at the keyboard. Read the scene the next day and it was all...
I do think this is closer to licensed tie-in fiction than to fanfic as it seems to be largely practiced today, but that isn't quite what I was thinking in my original post. I don't think Amazon is trying to absorb or poach from the fanfic community that exists right now. I doubt their rights...
