Nope. Still sounds like a cop-out to me. Just my opinion, but the very term deus ex machina conjures up images of "divine intervention" and crap like that. Ancient literature is littered with examples of this. Everything from Homer's Illiad to The Epic of Gilgamesh and even into the Bible are...
I have to respectfully disagree with Reaver here. I think that the science behind the story is very important. Sure, a strong MC with an equally strong supporting cast is important, but if the sci-part is lacking, well...then I guess it's just futuristic fantasy. Maybe that's why I detest...
I agree with both Sheilawisz and Graham Irwin- I think you're really on to something here. This is a very cool way of submerging yourself in your creations and I'll bet that you've written some very cool stuff.
