Simple is better I think. Start with the group playing catch up and reduce the number of of POV changes. If the beginning group bit is just a page it can be cut (when in doubt, cut). You can always find place for character building later.
Yes, people can react very differently. I have some in the novel I am working on and some in my writer's group were very positive and others the complete opposite. The plus for me was there were are lot more who reacted positively. This has given me the confidence to leave it in.
In my writing, I'm really careful about using words correctly, mainly because I easy get it wrong if I don't check and recheck. When reading, I think I would be oblivious of irregular use of a verb unless it was so obvious that it pulled me out of the story. I'm fairly sure I would just read...
I like your setting based approach. You'll never cover everything, but I think this idea is a good one. I think the Low/Historic Tech could use a pre-medieval category (Ancient?). Also, an Off World/Secondary World group of categories would be helpful I think.
Hi,
I'm Rick. I'm just saying hello. I write stuff and have had some short stories and flash fiction published. My writing tends to go across genres, with a big emphasis on Scifi/fantasy cross over stuff, or just Scifi or Fantasy. I'm looking forward to see what it's like here. :)
