    Keeping your book secure

    Yep, encrypting it is the way to go. Requires authentication, which means if it gets stolen everything should remain hidden.

    Who else writes longhand?

    Yes, that's very true. I hadn't looked at it that way. I suppose one of the other differences between longhand and word processing is that editing is much more immediate on a word processor - perhaps with longhand you need to be more considered? Just a thought.

    What is the most gripping novel you've ever read? Fantasy or otherwise?

    For me, without any doubt, it was The Road (Cormac McCarthy). Once I picked it up I pretty much couldn't stop reading it. When I was a lot (lot!) younger, I had a similar experience with Feist's The Magician. I think I read it in a couple of days.

    Gosh, I couldn't imagine doing that! Still, you have to go with whatever makes your creative flow work best for you. I must admit, however, that although I do my writing straight into a word processor, I do print it out for editing.

    I just couldn't imagine writing in longhand (or shorthand for that matter!). It would just be so painful. And what do you do when you want to send something off for publishing? I don't think any agent/publisher accepts handwritten submissions anymore, unless you're already well established...

    Capital next to river plausible?

    Many of the world's capitals are inland - London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, to name a few - though, of course, they are all built along the banks of important rivers. I think building walls around around such city opens up lots of interesting options in fantasy worlds. If your world is magic...
