I'll add a short story to the list tat you can read and that might help you see that "fantasy and YA" don't need to be written as being so far from our world or so deep into the genre's conventions. Try the short story "The Night Market" by Holly Black. It's in a collection of her stories and easily found. It centers around a cultural belief/folklore, more than pure fantasy but I'd say 75% of the story could be anywhere, anytime. The main character is a teen but it's not a YA story as you might think of it. Hope it helps!
