How can a summoning ritual force a god to materialize in the mortal realm?

Gods inhabit a parallel reality known as the astral realm, and are separated from the mortal plane through an ancient barrier. This veil blocks beings above a certain threshold from crossing over, keeping vastly powerful creatures from crossing over willingly. The exception to this is when a god possesses the body of a individual and uses it as a vessel. This form of possession allows it access to some of its powers while allowing it to walk among us mortals.

A group of atheists have banded together to form a cult devoted to killing gods. While they can't ignore the fact that gods exist, they have determined that they are not deserving of worship, and that humanity is better off without them. To this end, they have used this ritual to summon gods to the mortal plane in the bodies of selected people. Sacrificial victims are incapacitated or paralyzed during this process, preventing the god from fighting back. The cult is then able to more easily dispatch them without much resistance.

Gods are above mortals in terms of power and knowledge, yet they are unable to pass through the veil separating them from us. How could a summoning spell designed by humans force a god to materialize in the mortal realm?

Well, the god would have to come to the rude awakening that there are powers in the universe more potent than themselves. I would suggest that by use of a ritual, something of a magical nature is taking place, and the magic force of the universe trumps so and so gods epic powers.

Quick Question: So..... gods are being lured into mortal vessels to be "dispatched" by god-killers? Why would killing the vessel kill the god vs. killing the vessel just sends the god back to the astral plane?

If powers are throttled down to a lower bandwidth with crossing the barrier through the astral plane into this plane, Where does their normal power levels "go"? As worded, it sounds like 'some parts/powers' of the gods are left behind in the astral plane.

If that is the case, that these gods basically leave part of their powers behind like towing an anchor, maybe the ritual "cuts the line"?

Or, perhaps this cult has found a way to get all of the powers to cross the barrier with the god's crossing (without their awareness), so they cannot go back through the barrier if their vessel is destroyed?

Has there ever been an incident where gods crossed before a barrier, or what happens when they cross without reducing bandwidth? "Who" made the barrier?

I would suggest that the ritual doesn't just provide a vessel, but somehow cuts the line -or shortcircuits- the barrier long enough to make them 100% vuleberable (mortal). Maybe something as academic as reversing the barrier polarity or... crossing the streams?

I would also propose that tinkering with the barrier itself, while effective for killing one god at a time, may not be a sustainable idea. Perhaps, with every god they kill, the barrier holding back all of the gods gets weaker...

Ideas:
They know the gods real name and he/she must come when called
When the ritual is done on someone who was previously possessed by a god, the god can be forced to return to the same person
The blood of the offspring of a god must be used in the ritual
Every god has a specific holy animal or object that must be used in the ritual
A specific location must be used for each god (the place in our world that corresponds to where they were born)
