Races

I'm trying to think of some other races to use other than the normal ones that are in most fantasy books, i.e. Elves, Dwarves or fairies? I know I will be using mermaids only I'm going to call them something else. If you can help with any other obscure but recognizable beings, please let me know, thanks.

Fauns, gnomes, tieflings- to name a few. You can always do half-breeds like half elves, half orcs etc. A lot of role playing games are popular for having a dragonborn race or something of its sort. And you can even mess around with subspecies of things like wood elves, high elves, and drow, etc.

Some people also consider mages and necromancers to be their 'own race'.
