Backburners burning the house down...

Figuratively I mean with regards to the topic title.
How do people manage all of the things people, and specifically, authors need/should be doing?

My "to-do" list is more a wishlist than anything :p every once in a while I will be able to make some real progress and knock out 1 or 2 things (haha, yes, that's real progress).

I realize that it would be easier if we were able to "quit the day job" and be authors full-time...(Aside: why do we say "quit the day job" when writing is easily more time-intensive than any (most) day-jobs? Is it because we write at night???)...but it still seems like there are unlimited things that authors can/should/must be doing whenever they have the time available.

Obviously, there is writing, and I definitely agree that not too much of our time should be taken with building an online presence, but there are so many things that could help to do!

So how does everyone manage it? Or do we just put headphones on with the music up real loud and say, "La la la! I'm not hearing the persistent knocking of undone tasks"?
