belated Introduction

(Okay, time to stop stalling on the Intro…)

I'm Ken, otherwise known as Wordwalker or "that longwinded dude on the writing and weapons threads." And I've been having a great time here.

For years now I've been a dedicated struggling novelist and technical writer. I've always loved fantasy--Tolkien's still inspiring, Barbara Hambly defined quality for me, and then Patrick Rothfuss sent the whole profession back to the drawing board. Lately I've been exploring more contemporary settings:

Shadowed (out earlier this year) I've classed as paranormal, the hero haunted by enhanced senses when he can't understand how he got them or how to live with them. Meanwhile the current WIP is more openly magical, since it involves a talisman or two that need to be ritually used at the right sites in the city--and always the question of what enemy might be trying to discover those secrets. (Plus, I've always wanted a hero who could fly.)

Most of all I want to thank all of you for such a nifty place to ask questions and sound off. I hope I can leave the forum a little better than I found it… but not leave it just yet.

What's it like being a technical writer?

It's fun, in that it's using language to lay out clarity for instructions or procedures or such. It can be trickier than it looks because it's also interviewing engineers or other specialists and getting the hang of the details quickly, but it's a good way to make a living with skills not completely different from storytelling.
