End of Assasins Creed Brotherhood - WTF?

So last night my wife and I finished plaything through Assassins Creed Brotherhood, which is an incredible game.

However, we were thoroughly confused by the game's ending. In particular...

Why does Desmond kill Lucy???

This made no sense.

Any ideas?

There is a specific woman Desmond is supposed to be with, codenamed (or literally named) Eve. Desmond had feelings for Lucy, and therefore Lucy got in the way of this predetermined match, so Juno killed her through Desmond. There is also some speculation that she was a traitor, but I personally don't agree with that.

....Lucy is still alive. A hidden blade to the stomach doesn't really scream "FATALITY" to me. But we might only find out in AC3 or at the very end of Revelations. Also, the traitor theory sounds ludicrous to me as well.
