Ideas for a military structure

I am working on a war fantasy story. The society is in the Iron Age and many soldiers ride griffins. Since a civil war occurs in my story, I obviously need a military hierarchy and how it works.

I do not want to use the Roman system since my culture already has some similarities with Rome (It has a republic, it is the Iron Age, and has good infrastructure.)

What are some ancient military structures to borrow ideas from, preferably from the Iron Age?

China? This would of been the Warring States period which was basically a huge civil war. Around this time, military philosophy and literature was a big thing. For example, The Art of War was written around this period. You could probably also look into Qin and Han dynasty period but I don't know if they qualify as "Iron Age".

Chinese states were more or less monarchies at that period so I don't know how well that would work if your setting is a republic.
