recurring characters

I'm inspired by GRRM's Haviland Tuf to write some stories with a recurring character to build into a fix-up novel. Is that still done, though? If so, what are some examples? Thx.

ThinkerX

Myth Weaver
That's kind of sort of what I'm doing with several of my characters.

It used to be a common practice. Anymore, I'm not so sure.

Ed Greenwood has some great recurring characters. Mirt is one that is still quite active, and Ed is one of the best at that in my opinion.

Bruce McKnight

Troubadour
I think it's a cool idea that can be entertaining as long as it's not forced. I think it's great if there's a lot of opportunity to have the character show up, but once you start contriving situations for him/her to appear, it can annoy readers.
