Questions About Q&A Posts And Sensitive Topics

I have about two questions. On Reddit, I used to post Q&A posts, such as "What is your society's attitude towards nudity," "How high is the murder rate in your world," or "How would your characters react if they visited the real world," like other people did on Reddit. Is that acceptable here?

My second question might be a little awkward, and involves a question about pornography. It's titled something like "What is your society's attitude towards pornography, or how would they react to it?" It might be a justifiable question to ask, but I was wondering if it would be allowed on a "family-friendly" website. For question details, I was wondering if there were age limits on it, or if it was legal. I was also wondering how they would react to the contorted poses often seen in porn, or the extreme fetish scenarios sometimes seen in porn, though I can leave out the latter two if you want.

I don't just ask about sexual topics, and porn is not something that actually interests me very much, so you don't have to worry about that.

That's pretty standard.

It's a little dicey. You can ask it, if you're asking about people's attitudes and aren't getting explicit. But it's one of those threads we'll have to watch and keep issuing warnings for and hope that it doesn't become a problem.

If you choose to start the thread, please remind everyone in the OP to keep the discussion tame. And please be specific about what you're looking for people to contribute.

It may end up getting locked, which is never the outcome we want.

Agree with Devor.

Three tenets to keep in mind:
#1 - Mythic Scribes is a family-friendly site.

#2 - Be respectful of other members.

#3 - Keep an open mind.

If you keep those points in mind, you'll be fine 99% of the time.

is sleeping with your sister-in-law incest

Where I live sex with someone related by blood or marriage is viewed as incest. It's also a crime punishable by up to ten years' jail. The laws and definitions of incest vary from place to place and whether or not you can mention this subject in your writing will also vary considerably.

In what way is this question related to fantasy?

It might not seem relevant in itself but a simple screw-up like characters having sex with in-laws could get the book banned or the writer arrested. In a genre noted for pushing the boundaries such a question is relevant for fantasy writers. Whether it;s relevant for this specific forum is another matter altogether.

IIRC the Song of Ice and Fire series has a LOT of incest and other equally nasty stuff, and to my knowledge they haven't been banned...

Censorship laws are not uniform around the world nor are they enforced uniformly or consistently. That's why writers need to be careful about the subjects they are writing about, especially if the books are targeted at specific audiences like young adults. As a general rule the more well known the author the less likely their work will be banned or censored. Also, books targeted at young adults and children are more likely to be banned or censored than books aimed at adults.

There are indeed many aspects to consider, which is why I await clarification from the OP.
