The races of the Nine Realms: The Syreni

the syreni are a race of fish-like people. they generally have skin in shades of blue and blue-green. they also have small fins on their arms and legs, as well as a larger fin on their heads, Mohawk style. these fins can be tinged on the ends with any variety of colors, and the color you are born with determines your position in society. the syreni with duller colors are generally servants and farmers, while syreni with metallic colors are diplomats and leaders. there are also syreni with crystal fins, who are designated as the highest rank, those of philosopher and priest. all syreni participate in these fields, but only the crystal finned are able to do it as their profession. the syreni are acutely attuned to the ebb and flow of the universe, and as such, many of the nine realm's greatest philosophers and priests have come from the plane of water.

Interesting so far! How fishlike are the Syreni? Are they obligate water breathers or can they also breathe air? How would they interact with other folk --- presumably those who do live in the water plane?

What do they look like? Are they mammals or, well, fish? Or something else? How do they communicate?

In The World, there are several races of watery folk. The best known, perhaps, are the Polupodes, several kindreds of cephalopod, not unlike ammonites or nautilus or cuttlefish. They have devised a kind of outersea ship from which they seek out the fish markets of the seaside cities of Men. Easy pickings, you see. Just drop a kind of net-woven basket down into the trollies of mariscine goodness that have just come off the fishing boats and hightail it out of town quick as a wink!

Landfolk and Seafolk have not, as of yet, sorted out how to interact with one another. Communications thus far have been limited to the one side yelling incomprehensibly at the other while the others flail their tentacles unintelligibly. Neither side even recognises that the other is even trying to communicate...

i imagine them similar to the triton who look like the image, with the obvious differences i stated. they are able to breath both air and water, and they love to socialize with anyone who will listen to their newest theories on the universe
