    Ask Me About Horses

Well everyone's pretty much answered :) You can tie wood to a saddle; I attach stuff to saddles all the time. And if the horses are well trained they'll drag stuff. I think I've mentioned hobbling horses, but you can also have horses that are trained to 'ground tie' which is where they've...

    Describing things?

I love that movie, but I never thought of applying it to writing. Pretty cool :)

My 10 rules for interacting with various 10 rules of writing lists. ;-)

Ha ha. That had me chuckling. And it's too true. There may be something to say for having a few key principles to writing, but all 'rules' should be taken with a grain of salt. In science rules are meant to be followed, in writing they're sometimes meant to be broken :)

Damn! How much do you write each day?

I've been doing NaNoWritMo this month, and it's made me write about 2 hours a day and 1500 to 2000 words. It's a good system for me. I can usually find the time when I make myself. Hopefully I can keep it up once the month is over.

Which of your characters do you connect with the most?

I feel like there's a little bit of me in all my characters, but then again that can be said of all people. Everyone has something that they can connect to in another person. But I'm not sure if I feel connected to one of my main characters more than the other (at least in the story I'm working...

To curse or not to curse?

I think when writing swears - just like when speaking swears - the more you use it, the more it loses its impact. If your characters are constantly turning the air blue, it won't mean as much when they drop a bomb when something really happens, whereas if one character hasn't said anything...

Where Did You Get Your Handle?

I got my name from two of my favorite literary characters. The first Ariel from Shakespeare's The Tempest and second is one of the elves in Tolkien's The Silmarillion. Not very original either in name or story, but I like it.

    Motivating a perpetual war

Actually factions tend to fight when there's not one powerful leader (just look at the Moors in Spain). Each faction leader has his own ideas about how things should be, and you've already got a strong foundation for discord in the constant arrival of new leaders, which creates constant upheaval.

    Camp NaNo

Just wondering now that we've gotten past the first few days what everyone's thoughts are on camp. This is my first time, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm just terrified of falling behind, and since I'll be gone the last few days in June I'm shooting for finishing on the 26th. But it's been great...

    Ancient Brittan

The story I'm working on right now is based loosely off the Roman conquest of Britain, but I'm having some trouble finding sources about the lifestyle of the people then. I've found lots about the time of Arthur and the downfall of the Roman empire, but not a whole lot early enough for the...

    Exclamation Points!!! To what extent!

I don't like the last one. I really feel that exclamations are best left to direct quotes or onomatopoeias (which also should be used carefully).

    Ask Me About Horses

No, they can ride the horses while walking. They don't need to eat during the day, but at night they need to be hobbled so they can graze. A hobble is basically a rope tied around the ankle of a front leg and a back leg so they horse can walk but can't run away. Or you could give them a picket...

    Camp NaNo

Well got the first day done! Now let's see if I can keep it up :)

    Exclamation Points!!! To what extent!

My poetry writing teacher used to say you get one exclamation mark in your entire writing career, so use it wisely. But that was poetry (and not supposed to be taken completely literally). Still, the point remains: use them carefully. I don't see a reason to use them at all outside of dialogue...
