I often play word games such as Text Twist under the guise of improving my vocabulary. Crossword puzzles are great if you can find a source that writes them at a level just above your own vocabulary. Don't jump right into any particularly difficult ones or you might get frustrated.
Whenever I'm lacking inspiration I usually try to watch a fantasy or sci-fi movie that I haven't seen before. Sometimes flipping through some Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks, or just playing a game of D&D, helps get me inspired.

I agree with BeigePalladin. I often use the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manuals for creature ideas. Pretty much any pen and paper RPG will have at least one book specifically devoted to creatures.
