A "Find and Replace" Blunder and the importance of editing

I do a lot of writing every day. Not the writing I want to do, unfortunately, but I probably end up with between 7K and 10K a day worth of written material. When I have to go through and make global changes to documents, "Find and Replace" is a huge time saver. But as you all know, Find and Replace can make changes you didn't want if you aren't using it carefully (or even if you are). So I go through a printed version and proofread.

Given how much I use Find and Replace, I found this story particularly funny:

War and Nookd :: The Future of the Internet — And How to Stop It
"If ever man stalked man, Flay stalked Swelter. It is to be doubted whether, when compared with the angular motions of Mr. Flay, any man on earth could claim to stalk at all. He would have to do it with another word." - Mervyn Peake, Titus Groan

Yes, I well remember a few unhappy occasions...

Now I do Find and Replace only one by one.

I do one by one as well, unless I've got a long string so that I know a global find and replace won't screw things up. For example, earlier this week I had to replace the phrase "first shoulder member flange 38" with "first shoulder member flange 39." Something like that you can do globally without much fear of a screw up

As long as you don't have independent fingers and a wandering mind...
