Being open to all possibilities frees you from attachments, at least partly. I agree it relieves you from unnecessary suffering in more than one way.

I agree with pmmg. I always start with a conflict.
It can be either about two characters wanting the same thing and then fight over it or about them wanting the opposite outcome of something.
Then I create more conflicts which shape the world and are a fertile soil for developing characters.

Actually, a world that is a prison where the prisoners are not aware of the fact that they are prisoners doesn't sound bad. It sounds familiar, though.
