No, I don't read exclusively fantasy though it is probably my favorite genre. I get hooked on a certain genre and then move on to another depending upon what I come across. The breakdown right now probably looks something like this:
40% manga (mystery, thriller, romance)
30% fantasy
20%...
Great question! I suppose the answer would depend upon the type of disability. In one of my stories the culture is militant and status is determined upon military accomplishments. Those of the lower classes who are unable to work/join the military are taken to concentration camps. The work...
I had never heard of a "throughline" before. From this discussion it sounds like it is distinct from theme, though I'm not exactly sure how yet. Is it something that encompasses the entire story,or a single character like a character arc? Maybe I'll check out the podcast, thanks for recommending.
That's an idea that I've never thought of including into a story! So no, my world does not have a censorship code. Though, I think it would be very appropriate for one of them. Actually, now that I think about it, one of the countries in a particular story of mine has outlawed the equivalent of...
I found this video on YouTube yesterday and wanted to share it! It contains short 2ish minute interviews with authors like JK Rowling and Neil Gaiman. The last "tip" cracked me up!
If you guys watch it, let me know which tip is your favorite!
I think you all make good points. Writing will be richer if drawn from personal experience, but it would be unreasonable to only write about things we have experienced first-hand. Lots of things we will have to make up as well, such as what having wings might feel like for a person or how it...
I'd never learned about or even considered passive voice before (newbie alert) and you all did a great job explaining it. I can see how a story would drag if passive voice were to be used a lot. I'll have to watch out for it in my own writing!
Welcome Rachel!
From what I've heard, it's pretty common to finish a first draft and feel that it's terrible. I'm fully expecting to feel that way once my first draft is finished! :)
I think the use of Eras would be extremely helpful in orienting readers. Sometimes I get confused because I am supposed to keep track of a number of significant historical events but it's not clear whether historical event #1 was far back, way far back or even when it was in relation to...
Thanks for your response, ppmg. I'm a bit younger and grew up in the 90's so I didn't get to learn about it as it was occurring. You're right that what happened in Argentina probably didn't affect us as a nation that much if at all. I suppose I just wish that I had learned more than just...
One of my stories has a war and revolution inspired by the "Dirty War" that occurred in Argentina from 1976-1983. I was lost in the land of Pinterest when I saw a list of different types of governments, one of them being "junta," which I'd never heard of before. I looked it up and came across...
:O Oh. My. Word. How interesting! Like pmmg, I'm also wondering what Mr. Clinton's role in the writing process will be. Do you think that they are doing a project together just to stand out, be different or what? From what I read of the article, it doesn't sound like they knew each other...
My husband and I loved it as well! I've been listening to the soundtrack. :D
I liked the family relationships theme and the graphics were beautiful! It had so many vibrant colors!
The scenes where I felt like I was flying or moving around with the characters were really fun too! I'm glad I...
