Ironically, there already is a very significant tree in this elf's home city. The Grand Tree is this massive tree resembling an oak that is taller than the tallest manmade structures on Earth. The city is built around it. The richest nobles and the royal family actually live up in it's branches...
That whole thing was absolutely beautiful. *_*
I would have to change the type of leaf, since this does not take place in Middle Earth, but yeah. It fits surprisingly well. You don't even know how well it fits.
The only thing that makes the Damsal in Distress trope a bad thing is that it happens almost exclusively to girls, thus perpetuating the myth that women are weak and need to be protected.
However, the truth is that all of us, male and female, get in trouble. We all need someone to rescue us...
By all means! Break the rules! Know that the rules exist and break them anyway! It's glorious! I mean, how boring would it be if every dwarf ever written was a rough and tumble miner? It'd be super boring! Mix things up, and you'll keep things fresh and interesting.
That said... just because...
Short question...
One of my characters has a tattoo, probably on his left shoulder, and I'm not sure what it should be, but I want it to symbolicly hint at loss, or secrets, or unrequited love, or all those things. But not too blatantly. ...Any ideas?
Longer explanation...
The story...
Nine years ago, when I was a weird little kid with a sketch pad and a lot of dumb ideas, I made up a story for fun. It was about a pair of sisters and their talking cat sidekick who fight an evil queen and her batlike minions.
Well... To say the least, this story's changed a lot over the years...
In my book, dinosaurs roam around, and the locals call them Dragons. These Dragons are more or less the same as Earth's dinosaurs were long ago, except for a few minor details. Some of them are tamed and bred to be small and docile. Some of them are wild and grow to be properly gigantic. Some of...
Thanks, all of you, for the very insightful advice. ^^
I do think I have something that could happen in his past that would make him forever distrust the bat folk...
You see, there was this one time, when the King went off to go figure out a peace treaty with the fauns so that maybe they...
So I have this character. He isn't the main character. The main character is a seventeen year old girl. She's also the narrator. This guy is the same age as her, and, in general, isn't that bad of a guy. He tries his best to be a gentleman, is always trying to make other people happy, and his...
So I'm writing out the outline for a story I plan on starting, and then all of a sudden I realized something about the story as a whole. There's accidentally a lot of comparisons I can draw between my story and the 2nd book in the Harry Potter series.
My main villain is a man who is able to...
I hate seeing Goblins, Orcs or Trolls being presented as an "evil" race with no redeeming qualities, or being far less intellegent than humans. ...It just...rubs me the wrong way. I think it's wrong to ever say "This entire race of people is bad" even in fiction.
I might be over thinking semantics... again. But here is a thing that stumps me.
In the story I'm writing, there are these people... let's call them "Chosen Ones" (don't worry, they're not actually called that). They are chosen by the spirit of a particularly powerful magical artifact to be...
That's perfectly plausible. They have no shortage of really tall buildings, given that they like being up in the air. ...And having one's wings maimed would be particularly shameful for them. Rendering your enemy flightless is seen as the worst insult you can inflict upon another person. They...
