Using Earth terms for a Fantasy world

Great input. Thanks everyone. I am leaning towards not using the earth animals as a description, and letting the readers mind run with it.

Using Earth terms for a Fantasy world

Two different points, and both well taken. Anybody else? The image in my head of the animal is so vivid, I just want to share that with people. So I am trying hard to do the animal justice.

Using Earth terms for a Fantasy world

Okay, So I have created my fantasy world, and have a lot of made up creatures roaming around in it. It's my world, so I do have earth named creatures as well. My question to you is, as a reader, when trying to describe a new creature would you rather I kept it in fantasy trying to...

    Maps: What Should I Do?

Here is the one I used: Polygon Map Generation demo I liked it because it was a smaller world, which I needed, plus you can do 2d, 3d, shaded and lot of other mixes.

    Maps: What Should I Do?

I had the same problem. I found a couple of different "map generators" online. Just google that term. After an hour or so of generating, I found something that I liked, then wrote my story around the map. I just used Microsoft Paint to add dots and names of villages, and now I have a cool...

Why do we read and write fantasy?

I read to escape. I want to fall in love, or become that character. I want to stumble across a magic staff myself, so I am going to read about it and hopefully will it to life! Write it? Because it is fun when my mind get's lost in a story that I am inventing, and the ideas keep rolling in...

    Introduction chapter struggles

As a reader, and I read a lot, I want to be engaged right away. I want to say, "That was cool" and now I am ready to find out about the back story to the character, because of what just happened. I like books that spoon feed me information throughout the story, rather than all at once. I...

    A woman utilizing "feminine" skills

Each character to their own! If she is a tailor, then sew away. If she is a butt-kicker, then kick away. A reader should either fall in love with the characters attributes or relate to them. I was told I better get thick skin before I allow people to read my stuff. So I am getting ready.

    Using names too often?

Awesome conversation everyone. This is something I have been struggling with myself as I finished up my first book. I just did the first edit, now it looks like I will go back for a second and make some conversational changes. I think I might have BDS in my story. Thanks

How to refer to a character

idknull is correct imo. If the character is talking about or thinking about the noble, all kinds of names could be used. But when actually having dialog, then come up with the proper name: My Lord, Sir, last name, etc.

    Action Scenes

I just joined, and am finding the forum great. I just finished my first fantasy book and am now looking for ways to make the second even better. I just got done reading a series of fantasy novels, and found that I would skip over a lot of his fighting scenes. The author insisted on describing...
