    Losing Interest When Writing?

This is why I never plan any worlds in advance! By the time that's all done, I've started thinking about something else. My advice is just to start writing and work on the world as you go along. Doesn't work for everyone of course, but worth a try perhaps.

    Weird writing techniques

I often think of scenes (both for books in progress or just totally random) that I will write for future use. I used the 'random notebook' method too, for this before, but I've finally managed to collate them into a file on my computer.

    Fantasy birth control talk

In the books you'll notice that the characters (including Cersei and her brother) are a lot younger than on the TV series! If you read Jack Vance at all, many of his books have quite explicit scenes in, including rape, which is sometimes carried out by the protagonist! (Cugel's saga for...

    Writing while intoxicated

I write whilst drinking a lot, it loosens the mind up, lubricates the idea centre of your brain. Also it's fun seeing what you wrote the next day! That said, it gets to a point when you have to stop, 'cos you can't hit the keys with any accuracy anymore.

    Naming Characters

Most of my stories have a main character with short names: Ian, Bob, Alice etc. Mainly because I know I'm going to be typing it a lot, and it's faster to type Bob than Bartholomew, however you spell that.

What clichés should be avoided in my story?

My first question is (without reading anything more than the above) : Why would he hide it in a swimming pool? It hardly seems a secure location. Also, why should she bother defeating him? Couldn't she just give it to some local resistance? Unless she can't get back home unless he's dead...

So my story is too offensive :(

I'm offended by the fact you think your story is offensive.

    The Lord of All

One of my latest ones. Fantasy. Velvet, a young woman, is rescued from an attack by two strangers. She finds out they are just trying to get back home, and decides to help them. Unfortunately, this task is going to involve a lot more than taking a ship to another city! Brief Excerpt: The...

    Walkabout - Chapter 1

Here's the start of one I recently begun. It's only a short way in, so if you wish to read more, goto opuspath.com and check it out. Note, warning, whatever: Contains language. --- It was a medium sized city, somewhere in a place he'd never heard of. Ian had once seen a cartoon with a man...

    Some of my Fantasy/Scifi/Humour works

I've been churning cra... er, highly intelligent writing for a while now, so thought I'd share some of it here. Why not already. I mostly write fantasy and scifi, though with some tongue in cheek humour thrown in as well. Also some works that are quite adult. And I don't generally hold...

Interactive Fiction. Is it a legitimate genre?

I agree with the sentiments above. For me, it's never lost the olde Choose your own path paper versions flavour. I also see it as more of a game. Which is also, IMHO, why it's never really gone 'mainstream'. It takes people too long to get into it, and involves effort, Hades forefend...

What Would Drive a Character To Torture Their Enemy

Reasons for torture. Oh, so many. However, top of the head... Fun, sexual kicks, to extract information, to get revenge, to make a point, religion or other beliefs. Those are my reasons anyway. In, er, books. Yes, books.

Can I use names from other cultures?

Personally I say go for it. As long as you don't intend offense, then a name should be a name, and you should be free to use it. People use swear words don't they? Some people find that language offensive. If you worry about offending people over every little thing you'd best give up...

Are fantasy inherently safe and reactionary?

I totally agree to all of that. Well put. But a if a story was such, it wouldn't be a good yarn!

Are fantasy inherently safe and reactionary?

was a bit surprised to find political stuff in a fantasy setting. ...I don't agree. There's tons of political stuff in many fantasy stories. Just look at Game of Thrones, off the top of my head. That's pretty much all political! Political intrigue is meat for many fantasy tales, just as...
