Wow, that is a lot of details. Unless you plan to have an appendix like Tolkien shared in some of his material, no one will actually have the chance to see/know all this. But for background purposes, I think it's a valuable thing to have around.
Well, without going through the hassle of explaining it to your readers, to me, I prefer to establish the rules and mechanics beforehand. It greatly helps to be consistent within the story. Pesky readers tend to pick up on things when they don't add up.
But I agree you do not need to explain it...
As many have already said, parallels with the real world are almost unavoidable. I don't perceive them as a bad thing, per se. To me, it's much more about what you do with them and how you develop them. As a large portion of us live in the northern hemisphere, it would be unsettling to picture...
