I think this is a really subjective thing; planning, like every other step should take as long as it needs, and every project will be a little different. I don't think it's ever a good idea to get too bogged down with things like 'how long' or 'how many', at least not until your first draft is done!

Interesting stuff there Michael! I find the publishing industry as a whole (trad and indie/self) really fascinating right now, as it seems to be in such a state of flux that it's hard to tell where things are going. I really wonder what the industry is going to look like in a couple of years time.

I remember reading an article about the 10,000 hours of focussed practice required for mastery of something. I don't know where the 1,000,000 words total came from, but I think there's a lot more to mastery, or even competence than just a number. Surely time spent reading, plotting, thinking, is...

I'm definitely in the 'however many it takes' camp. I don't think it's a good idea to write with a word count in mind; just write and see where it takes you!
