Hello composerk,
I think you're right--you're over thinking this. You mention that this is your first fantasy story, so it's an understandable feeling, but depending on what you're trying to do with your book, you should be alright. Some fantasy is written purely for the creation of the strange...
Not sure if this has been posted, but a repeat would not matter since this is some of the most beautiful music in all the world. It was used by the gold medal skating couple at the recent winter Olympics and has inspired many an epic scene in my own mind. I knew the instant it started that it...
Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the man! No one could mistake a passage of his writing when they come across it, both because of the writing itself, the word choice, and the imagery he evokes. One of the problems, I believe, with much modern fiction is that while the stories are good, the writing is...
Hey all. Recently, I discovered a piece of music that - for me - does the the trick of transporting the mind into that ethereal dimension between waking and sleeping. It is called Weightless, by Marconi Union. From Wikipedia:
On 16 October 2011, Marconi Union created an eight-minute track...
This is something I have been thinking about over the past few days. I noticed in the writing of action sequences how many fragments I used. I imagined how, if seen out of context (or even perhaps in context), a grammarian would frown. I had to take a look at some of the books on my shelf to...
Yeah, sorry about that.
I am somewhat surprised, though, by the number of people who say they lean more towards longs. The conventional wisdom, at least that which I have gleaned from writing books, seems to encourage people more towards shorts. In our more mystery/thriller oriented cultural I...
Ha! Nice.
Also, interesting note about short stories. When writing with a deadline in mind, such as 250 words (super short), it's amazing how much fat you can cut. You really have to whittle down to the bare bones while building a clear picture in the reader's mind. Surprisingly similar to...
To be fair the sentence was 1107 words long. That's what I would like to hear from you guys on, sentence length. From what I have read, writers can have quite strong opinions in this area. If you're pro-short sentences you are described as falling in the Hemingway camp, and if you enjoy...
This is my third year doing Nano, and it has been by far the easiest. No all-nighters, just an hour or two every day, and the result was 51K in 29 days. Amazing how that deadline can push you to write when under normal circumstances you'd read a book or browse the web. Exhausting? Yes. But but a...
I would say that would be fine. As far as I know Urban Fantasy often deals with concepts and situations out of the ordinary. The reason we write in this genre is to escape from the conventional and tell stories that are supernatural.
Ultimatly it is your story and you can do whatever you want.
Hi Ophiucha, glad to hear the series is turning out well. I recently read and greatly enjoyed the novel despite its length. You feel like reading a really big book once in a while.
I am looking forward to the series, though sadly, being in America, we have to wait to June 13th.
I would like to clear up the misconception that Paolini's parents were in the publishing industry. The first edition of Eragon was self-published, which anyone these days can do.
It got its kickstart when author Carl Hiaasen read it and recomended it to Random House, who, in turn, published it.
What I think is being lost here is the effect the book has upon the average reader. The writer without the reader is nothing. Millions of people loved the books simply because they told an entertaining story. The average reader is not as well educated in the writer's craft as I am sure the...
I will jump in here and say that I love Eragon. It is my favorite book in the series even if it is technically the weakest. I am another of those people that was inspired to start writing because of Paolini. The series may not have the greatest writing or the most original story, but as an...
Hi everyone, remember me?
I don't blame you if you don't, I've been away quite some time. There are a few reasons for this
1. I moved... into a house with no Wi-Fi! Yes, my family bought a new house and we do not have a network connection there. The only time I do get Wi-Fi is when I am at...
