Are Book Covers a Dying Art?

Well, there's definitely less covers by artists using paint/pastels, and more digital art and photo art--I've noticed this on both pro published and self published books. Although I've seen some amazing digitally created covers, I've also seen too many with a person slapped over a photo, and too...

    Amazon Author Rank

My book has been out about 2 months, it's bouncing around the ranks on both Uk, and US Amazon, and had been in the top 100 of historical fantasy on a dozen or more occasions (top ranking about 16). Made it up to around 80,000 on the German site too and it still has a rank there though it is...

Stone lord, novel of king arthur & stonehenge.out on amazon now

My novel STONE LORD has just become available on Amazon.com or Amazon. uk. This, my first book (though I was widely published in the small press in the 80's) is a novel retelling the legend of KING ARTHUR, but with a twist...it takes the legend back to its earliest roots in the British bronze...

    Proud of Preston

Very nice, Lorna...just my sort of thing, with landscape entwined with mythology/folklore.

Stone Lord, novel of King Arthur & Stonehenge

My novel, STONE LORD, should be out within the next month (approx) from Mirador. It's a retelling of the perennially popular Arthurian legends...but with a twist. It's not set in the Dark Ages or quasi-medieval fantasy setting...it's set in the era of Stonehenge, the early British bronze...

    Best use of Twitter

Although my book is not out yet (within the next month) I have found twitter has been the biggie in driviung people from all over the world to my blog. I have even had a couple of well known authors contsct me via twitter to say they want to buy a copy whenit is available!

Herders, not farmers, may have built Stonehenge

Yes, this actually does seem to be the case. The Stonehenge people did have houses at the site of Durrington Walls 2 miles from the monument...enough to potentially hold 1-4000 people depending on family size, and this was where they did their feasting, not at the stones themselves...but...

    First or Third Person?

I nearly always use third person in my own writing, and prefer it in the books I read too, though two of my favourites are first person. I find first person can be somewhat limiting.

How Serious Are You About Writing?

I'm 7 or 8 with elements of 9 and 10. I have always wanted to be a writer since I wrote my first story when I was five, but I do have loads of other interests, which I've sometimes pursued to the detriment of my writing, though they are slowly receding and the writing come more strongly to the...

More on Review Wars and Self-Reviews

I know an author (also editor at the indie publisher that may be publishing my novel) and she had some controversial gay stuff in her books. She got a lot of one star reviews on Amazon, and complained, as the all the bad reviews were about the theme rather than the story. The news-story was...

The Fantasy Section in the Book Store (And Why Most of it Bores Me)

I agree about covers! And sometimes less is more. I used to detest those old Darryl K Sweet covers--gaudy primary colours (all in one individual's clothes), cod-medieval style no matter the setting (parti-coloured hose, naff 'Robin Hood' caps) and every character with a long red nose and...

Why it is hard to get reviews for your self-published book

In recent years I have read a lot of self published fiction. It is still battling old stereotypes I'm afraid. Many of the books I've read have been of good quality and often of a much more interesting subject matter (to me, at any rate) than what is being published in the mainsteam. Some are a...

What makes you give up on a book?

Orbs? Orbs! A true sign of the second rate! Anyone ever read Ursula Le Guin's LANGUAGE OF THE NIGHT ? Ultimate guide for fantasy writers which specifically tells you what NOT to do. Orbs wasn't one of her pet hates (though she'd probably add it) but she mentioned the equally fatal 'ichor'...

What makes you give up on a book?

Repetitiveness is a big killer for me. I'm reading a book right now in which the author has been repeating the same thing for three pages. It could have been a moody, creepy, dark scene but was wrecked by the authotr telling us over and over again what was happening. If you are writing a huge...

    Fan Fiction v. Copyright

I believe Mercedes Lackey says you can write fanfic in her world but not with her characters--you have to make up your own. I guess that's pretty fair. I used to write Tv related fanfic for the 80's show ROBIN OF SHERWOOD, and the creator of that series was very liberal about fanfic. The only...
