    Knowing where to begin

Thanks so much for all the feedback!!! :D I usually write on the computer (Notepad, mostly)... I have sort of a master list of notes from everything I'm working on, then I split them up into stories or genres notes since I write lots of Lit Fic too. When I actually start writing I usually try...

    Knowing where to begin

So I have a pretty structured (for me :D ) outline and idea of my story, the characters, the setting and the bare bones of my plot. I pretty much have all the ingredients to actually start putting words on paper... and I'm stuck? This is the hardest part for me... beginning. I've been...

    First Draft Blues

I've tried YWriter and could never figure it out. Then again, I probably didn't try very hard. :P But yeah, a first draft is going to suck. Its supposed to. I don't like it either because I hate editing but even Ernest Hemingway said "The first draft of anything is shit." Sometimes thinking...

    NaNoWriMo Novel Ideas

Hehehe sounds like an awesome idea, Phil. :) The only time I finished NaNo was when I planned to do something heavy and literary fiction, started on day one with an outline, got freaked out by that outline, and started out of no where from scratch on a fantasy story... so I'm going for fantasy...

    Fantasy Names

Very true. :) Cities you have way more leeway, or anywhere else you have a more melting pot atmosphere. Anywhere sort of closed off from the world, xenophobic, elite societies (etc etc) with few people leaving or coming then I would say its likely they'd have similarish names. :)

    Torture scenes

I agree. If torture is necessary to the plot, and sometimes it is for one reason or other, I like the approach of describing the beginning, leaving out most of the details and coming back to it in retrospect or through conversations, nightmares etc. which tend to be more psychological than...

Thoughts on including Adult-Rated material in your work.

I think it depends on how important the sex is to the story. If you have a character trying to bed another for a long time in a story, I always like a bit of fan service for the wait instead "Well, that finally happened... moving on". If something freaky that leads to further character...

    NaNoWriMo

I've done this for a couple years, and the only year I finished was with a fantasy novel so I'm thinking that will probably be my trajectory this year. I love to do it even when I don't finish, though, because the forums really hop with ideas and enthusiasm. Its fun. Recommended. :)

    Fantasy Names

I have a problem coming up with names for my fantasy and usually have placeholders until I finish (though I rarely do...) When I actually do stick names in there I do try to keep the names similar for region or race, as appropriate. I read somewhere something like (paraphrasing) If you have a...

    Idols in your Worlds

In my stories I always try to come up with lore and mythic figures. It usually winds up that they are revered almost religiously instead of just idolized as an ideal for the society, though I want to try and shift away from that a bit, or at least have a fair mix, in the next story.
