    Hot...or not. Cover-art article

Very relevant pic, Devor! I have to confess that part of my reaction was; Nooooo!...the beautiful elf is all ruined! Would it have seemed so awful a tragedy if she were not so 'attractive'? In a thoughtful reflection, yes, of course, gorgeous elf warriors are no more valuable than kindly old...

:-) 'Mordor weather' ...made me smile. Yes, overt manipulation of a character is sure to cause that breaking of the story spell, makes you feel ripped off. You glimpse the puppet strings. I guess it's a similar principle when it comes to cover art. A bit of subtlety wouldn't go amiss.

    Thorin Oakenshield

My wife did comment on Thorin quite a bit after the movie! And she also liked Kili and Fili. I find it quite amusing, Kili is clearly the token pin-up, they didn't make him wear a big nose like all the others. I can just imagine to banter on set, between the actors! Kili also featured big in the...

    Hobbit lives up to expectations

Its not the 3D that causes that wierd effect, but the high frame rate. Agree...I really enjoyed the Dol Guldur scene and also the White Council, both very good parts and typically great Peter Jackson story-telling.

    Designing covers for the thumbnail

Thanks for posting this Zero Angel, sounds useful, I'll have a read soon as I get chance. The whole thumbnail clarity issue is troublesome when trying to create covers.

    Yoogle

Thought it might be fun to see how well your computer knows you..or rather how well Google knows you. This is not a scientifically rigorous test! I checked out my google chrome ad prefs and it gave quite a good summary of my interests. Though it did miss my age range by over twennty years, which...

Can't say I am familiar with particular artists, though I came across Justin Sweet a while back, he has some great work. I looked up Luis Royo's covers, amazing detail and light, if a little too raunchy for my taste :P

    Hobbit lives up to expectations

Aww, that's not fair of them, talking during the movie. I am hopeless at ignoring that kind of thing and would have asked them to stop. Drives me crazy, such inconsiderate behaviour! Yes, the rabbit drawn sled was brilliant! Some reviewers were not so keen, but I thought it in perfect keeping...

    Hot...or not. Cover-art article

That's a pretty amusing alternative cover shot, steerpike! I put my hands up and say that if I am scanning over books or magazines (any genre) my attention will be caught by a beautiful female depicted therein. It doesn't mean I am looking for books illustrated in that way, but inevitably it is...

    Hot...or not. Cover-art article

oops sorry Aelowan :-) Interesting thoughts. Just shows that its not black and white, and that its not just about male readers wanting pin-ups populating the realms of fantasy writing.

    Hot...or not. Cover-art article

Came across this : BBC News - The battle against 'sexist' sci-fi and fantasy book covers on the BBC site today. Quite an interesting piece. I have to confess being a fan of the way females are often portrayed in fantasy art and online games. As a male it's hard to resist the appeal of a...

    Hobbit lives up to expectations

Very nice bit of analysis, Black Dragon. From what I remember, the music at the point Thorin advanced down the fallen tree at Azog was the motif for the Witch King/Black Riders, in particular it reminded me of the Weathertop scene from fellowship but I may be remembering wrong. I did find it a...

    Hobbit lives up to expectations

I saw the movie in 3D standard frame speed. I am with Ireth and Sheila...utterly loved it! What a beautiful, stunning film. It didn't feel at all slow or stretched out to me, I could have stayed riveted to my seat for another hour :-) I am so glad they are drawing in other storylines, and it's...

    Final Draft of Cover

Quite good, but I think it would be better with more of the background showing, giving a mood of the forest. Maybe the contrast adjustment will sort that. I like the greenish light in the ground where the sword is standing. You may need to increase the font sizes, the amazon thumbnail plays...

    ebook formatting

I can relate to your opening post, Harbinger. I spent ages getting my book formatted, in the end I used Sigil and Calibre. At least now I have a good level of experience and it will be much quicker next time around. I'd recommend Sigil if you are not happy with other methods. Loads of control...
