    What is magic?

I really think that as long as magic is consistent and doesn't feel like a dues ex machina, it is good and doesn't necessarily need to be explained. Some universes call for more scientific forms of magic and that can be really cool, to make it make sense, more an alternate way the world works...

    Are vampires too cliche?

It's also important to remember that even if your vampires are pretty normal your story doesn't have to be. Let The Right One In (the swedish version and book, haven't seen the american remake so i can't judge it) is not in any way the expected vampire story. But the vampire in the story drinks...

Re-inventing the Harpy and the Unicorn

Well it seems like you have a pretty good idea of what you want already. Personally, a harpy without any feminine element at all is just a bird monster. And bird monster is fine, i just wouldn't call that a harpy. And yea, there is the whole repoduction thing, you could make it asexual or...

    Dinosaurs in my novel

On the feathers thing there's an idea that large dinosaurs didn't have them (except perhaps vestigial crest-like things), while smaller ones would have, like Deinonychus's. I don't remember why though. I don't think it'll feel thrown in if this is a world of remade from an old one. It kinda...

    Superhero powers

He could simply be great at hand-to-hand, sometimes handling yourself without powers is even cooler than with them. Also, being a healer, does he perhaps work on a team? Maybe he's not much of a fighter at all. That doesn't mean he doesn't get into them, it just means he won't always have the...

Non-silly fantasy Names for non-humans (specifically orcs).

Well i was thinking since they're actually the protagonists of my work and would be shown as a complex people i could get away with being inspired by numerous non-european cultures (and a little german). They aren't direct analogues of anything regardless, but i get your point. I actually do...

    Homunculi

Well, then right there could be a problem. If slaves are commonplace and Homunculi take upkeep (food), why would slave owners bother with them? Especially if it's hard to make them.

Re-inventing the Harpy and the Unicorn

Celestia is indeed a bad-ass, but i go to a different forum for discussion of that. For non-animated unicorns, i still think you can call them Unicorns. Really my first thought of a unicorn as a kid was of the kind that was bound to a virgin maiden and protected her, though that may just have...

    Are vampires too cliche?

I agree that it's about the quality of presentation more than anything. The last book i read, The Last Werewolf, has vampires that really aren't all that different from classic depictions but i never felt like it was retreading or anything. Their place in the story is logical and they are...

Nature as an element can it work

Depends on how you define nature, really. I know this isn't a book but the online card game Elements has Entropy, aether and Gravity as elements next to earth, air fire and water (plus a few more) and it fits well. Of course you'd have to explain why more in a story than in a game. I think it's...

    Homunculi

Well, one of my favorite films Blade Runner has only one company making synthetic humans, though synthetic animals are common. I know it's a whole other genre but i don't really see someone managing a groundbreaking achievement as a plothole. Then again, if it fit the world of the story there'd...

Non-silly fantasy Names for non-humans (specifically orcs).

Hrmm, so i could go with finding some appropriate germanic or mongolian name, perhaps change it a bit. At least that's a starting point.

    Hello!

Hey all, i'm glad to be here. Mostly here due to a few ideas i have that would be nice to get some help on, but i'm planning on sticking around longer than just until i'm finished with those. I'm trying hard to get into the habit of writing everyday, and perhaps having a community to share some...

Non-silly fantasy Names for non-humans (specifically orcs).

I'm working on a story that stars an Orc, and has a few others in it as well. Seeing as they're more the 'analogue for cultures considered barbaric by civilizations such as the roman empire' type orcs than 'savage and weak-minded' type orcs, I want them to have names that have a sense of realism...
