Ever have a crush on one of your own characters before?

It's never occurred to me so I'll say no. Any character I create exists within whatever world I've written for them and so is a total work of fiction in my mind. That isn't to say I've never made a character that, if they actually existed, I wouldn't be totally into but that hypothetical...

    How long is long enough?

The best method for determining whether or story is complete (or too complete, even) is to give it to others who can look over your draft critically and constructively. Based on their feedback, you can really begin to understand what your novel(-la perhaps) needs. If I were to read it and feel...

    The Perfect Enemy

The villain, for me, is the one that you can almost relate to; the one that if the story were a little different, you'd probably root for them. Makes them far more realistic and more threatening, the way I see it.

    My beginning is bugging me.

I try to avoid these types of threads because we can never really give the proper kind of feedback even with the glut of information you provided. It's much easier over the phone or through detailed emails to cover all the bases required for a proper assessment and fixes to be done. As is, we...

What themes or motifs do you see popping up in your writing a lot?

Let me see here. Things I tend to include are: - Building friendships through trust. -Strong and varied female characters. -Humor. Even when I try to write more gritty things the humor slips in by turning dark/black comedy. -Rule through an oligarchy. I just seem to like group activities...

    Evil Dead reboot

I was pleased enough with it. Having been a fan of the original trilogy (Evil Dead 2 in particular), I knew coming in that they weren't trying to replicate it exactly which is a good way to handle a reboot. It was gory, vicious and while it didn't really give me many scares, there were some...

    Rules for beta readers?

As regards to the NDA, what the others have said is true. If someone came to me with one I'd probably start laughing before politely refusing. When it comes to the person, what I look for is someone who will read every line (no skimmers), can give constructive feedback ("It sucks" versus "This...

Unusual speech patterns: how much is too much?

I'm all for people mixing up speech and making dialogue actually interesting. Too many writers just have their robot characters speaking perfect English back and forth as if people ever actually talk like that. It helps make that character stand-out as well as your story so you go for it, Feo.

Spoilers actually enhance stories, says science.

New title for a book: "The Bad Guy Dies and the Hero Gets the Girl". I'll make millions...

    Should I Do This?

True enough but following your idea, you're simply leaving these eggs in there over spring break which, depending on the college, is at least a week long. So whereas most pranks get there payoff on April fools (a single day) yours may not come to fruition until well after the fact at which time...

    Should I Do This?

I guess my question would be, why bother?

How Many Fantasy Plots are There Really?

Speaking just to the quest idea, I think it's popular because it's rather easy. Take whatever MacGuffin you want, either give it to the MCs to take somewhere or have them try to recover it in order to stop some bad guy/girl/force. Start it with Character A, B, C which are your typical mix of...

    Your Subgenre

Humor of any kind is hard to remove from anything I read or write myself. Hard as I try to write seriously, it sneaks into everything one way or another. Rather than run away from it I try and embrace it. The kind of humor I'm talking about isn't the simple setup then punchline stuff but the...

    Going to vs. Gonna, Etc.

I'm all for it in dialogue. It gives things more flavor to proceedings and is a bit more realistic. Books where everyone speaks in proper English and in complete sentences are a tad robotic, for my tastes. In descriptions, though, I tend to keep to more standard grammar whenever applicable.

    Impact and responsibility (TRIGGER WARNING)

I would also humbly disagree with this. Now it's one thing if they're upset with my plot choices or word use or my ending but if it's something like a depiction of religion or a suicide or race relations that rankled someone I wouldn't be upset in the least. Writers for centuries have written...
