    Breaking rules

I would say write what feels appropriate for the scene. Robert Jordan's first chapter of The Eye of the World in the Wheel of Time series has some serious action near it's end, and the chapter is about 50 pages if I recall.

    Fantasy Reading List

I agree Neverwhere is better than American Gods.

    Reading to learn writing styles?

I am currently reading to inspire, which is something of the same as doing research on styles. Well maybe not, but I think it's equal parts inspiration and case study.

    The influence on writers

What would you, or how would you, contrast your character's religion? I agree characters are supposed to be their own people, self-contained in a sense. To the OP, I have a highly religious character, because a) I wanted to delve into religious beliefs, b) I think it's a great boon/flaw, and c)...

How many characters do you name, and based on what?

I actually thought everybody always names all their characters.

    Temporia (The land of seasons)

Just an idea, but why not place some influence from one to the other? Maybe there are vents that can be opened/closed in the wall that let cold air into summer and/or warm air into winter. Also with a perpetual winter I think architecture would have to be nice, but might be hard to maintain...

How do you guys get yourself out of a writing funk?

seriously i just start writing, even if its gibberish. i think the real issue is not necessarily being in a funk so much as stopping your process. you're your greastest enemy in that sense.

Writing Dark Characters: Lessons from Sympathy for the Devil: Revised Edition

I really enjoyed this post, but I would echo pmmg here: dark characters are one facet of a compelling story and, not all stories have dark characters (at least not of the caliber that you paint Tyle Graven here). Fantastic post though!

    Old Accounts Getting Hacked

I have an old account on here you may want to buckle down, spectre1982 I think it is. Anyway, I have lost my website credentials twice but have salvaged my portfolio entry (which I now find horrendous) so feel free to do away with that account.

Do wizards think of what they do as magic?

I'm reading Sorrow, Thorn, and something or other by Tad Williams. The Osten Ard world, and one of the characters does not think of his work as magic. Tad Williams initially describes it in terms of science, and I'm curious to see how that develops later in the story.

What types of characters do you find fun to write?

I really enjoy writing about characters who are hiding something as well as characters who are dangerous. This is not because I am a deviant, it's just that since I was a kid in movies and stories these were always the most fascinating and interesting characters who had a multitude of skills and...

Anyone else using dreams for wolrdbuilding?

I have now had two prominent dreams where I've awoken from my sleep and had to write down all/portion of it because I felt it was a good idea seed. One was more of a children's book and the other part of a complex storyline I've been working on; I find that if I really spend time worldbuilding I...

Writing Multiple Novels At The same Time

Likewise I prefer to hold my attention on one written work at a time.
