    How to critique horrible writing?!

I am a harsh critic and that is what I typically suggest. By harsh, I don't mean I'm just looking for problems. It's just that I like to be honest. That is what I want when I have something and that is what I think anyone deserves. Otherwise they are not going to improve- at least not as much as...

Plotting/Planning- How long does this stage take?

Thanks everyone. I'm guessing I've got a long way to go since I am still working on the History and have not really started on character profiles yet. Although I already have a good idea on a fair number of characters. Still, it is frustrating. Last time I thought I was ready to write, only to...

Plotting/Planning- How long does this stage take?

Hi all! So a little background. About a year ago, an idea for a story struck me. Basically, I felt that I had a fairly strong idea for the beginning and a good, unique way to end it. Problem was everything in between. Fast forward a year. I wrote about 7 chapters, approximately 25,000...

    I Am Seeking Critique Partners!

Hi, I'd be more than happy to take a look at your work and provide you with some critique. I am a sophomore in college and do not have any professional experience editing but I have critiqued various works as well as a beta reader for Michael Sullivan, a well known fantasy author twice now. If...

    Looking for a Critique Partner

Carl, I would be more than happy to take a look at your work. I too am looking for critique on my WIP, though I am not near so far into it as you (only six chapters). If this sounds good, feel free to send me a PM. Will

    Looking for Critique Partner(s)

Hi Nebuchadnezzar, I'd be more than happy to take a look at your writing and provide you with some critique. I actually have a WIP and am in need for some extra "eyes" on it as well. If this sounds good to you, fell free to send me a PM! Will

    How to plot/ get ideas?

Thanks again! I'll have to look into that- sounds like it could be extremely helpful. And thanks for your previous post- I will definitely try what you suggested. A little less school work could help out too so I could focus more on writing...

    How to plot/ get ideas?

Basically An idea struck me for a series. I know the Beginning, Middle, and End but am struggling on everything in between. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what did you do? (I already have written the first 2 chapters and feel that they are solid. They just flowed out while the third...

    Looking for Critique Partner(s)

So I'm new on this forum and relatively new to creative writing, though I do a lot of reading. For the past 6 months or so, a story has been sort of formulating in my head and I have decided that I would like to write it. As of now, it is a projected trilogy and I have just started writing the...

How do you design your main characters?

Personally, I don't find filling out a questionnaire very helpful. I prefer to start with a blank page (or several) and brainstorm by considering various characteristics and personality types I find interesting. These might come from friends or even myself, or I might like a certain thing about...

    Need advice on my map

I would say it depends on how complex your novel/series is going to be. Are there going to multiple different countries/kingdoms? Will there be lots of different houses? Will there be great sprawling deserts, mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, etc? If so, the 12,800 by 10,800 could be possible...

Is it possible to use magic without saying "magic"?

Michael Sulliavan's Riyria Revelations refers to magic as "the art". If you are creative, there are all kinds of things you can do

    Tell, Don't Show

Personally, I don't see a problem with occasionally telling the reader about a characters emotions. I prefer to describe them but there are always exceptions. That being said, I feel that the sentence could be a little better by removing the and and revising the second part after the comma.

What kills believability in a constructed world?

For me, a writer must be consistent. If not, it makes the novel or series extremely unbelievable because they are just able to shift things to suit their plot. Tying in with this is the hero getting by and reaching his goals unscathed. No one goes through life without some struggles and pains...
