I stand by what I said. A character has to be relatable. Not necessarily as the same race, but just as a person. Age is just one way of helping a character be relatable.

Well, generally in our world, we remember and idolise the people who did great things. In America they remember Thomas Jefferson, why? The Declaration of Independence of course. If you ask any American to name a famous US President, how many of them are going to say James Polk or Martin Van...
On one hand, thorough description can help a reader form a picture in their head of what you were envisaging when you wrote it.
On the other hand, a more sparse description allows the reader to form their own ideas of what the character/landscape/spell/whatever looks like, sounds like etc...
I would think it would be the sort of age that the reader can relate to.
If I'm 18 and I'm reading about the crippling back pain that a 70 year old man is having, I can't really relate. A character my own age is going to evoke much more empathy from me, and make that character all the more...
