    Clothing and Garb

I based my story off of a certain time period in Earth's history, so their clothing follows suit. Not to say I don't throw in some fantasy tropes as well though. I find a mix of different elements is usually the most fun to work with.

What Would Drive a Character To Torture Their Enemy

A personal grudge for sure. Also, I guess it depends on if you're character is "good", "bad" or morally ambiguous. Also if they think it for the good of the better whole, that might be a motivating factor.

    Out of curiosity

My personal preference is to look at a story as one large machine with countless working parts. The machine's purpose is to develop characters, themes and messages. If there are parts of the machine that are unecessary to the greater whole, cut them out. That being said, I love Wheel of Time.

    It's a Jungle Out There

Since my book is based on antiquity, my jungles are going to be far away, dark and unknowable. The legends that will come from them will probably involve ruined Lovecraftian cities haunted by abominations and giant snakes. Gotta have giant snakes.

Designing Religions: What Does the Shape of a Place of Worship Mean

I found it easier to design the beliefs of the religion itself, with those being reflected in the buildings themselves. I'm kind of learning as I progress into my story of course. For instance, the Solaran Empire, one of the major factions in the book, are monotheistic sun worshippers. I based...

    Unredeemable Tropes

Certainly, I love that movie. There's nothing I love more than a massively flawed character you still find yourself rooting for.

How do storms and floods affect culture?

Culturally, the natives of the area experience a diaspora if the land is rendered uninhabitable. They become refugees and adapt to other places they've had to move to. Over time, their language and culture might die out as a result if there isn't a conscious effort to keep it alive.

    Unredeemable Tropes

Essentially my protagonist has PTSD from his time as a soldier and did terrible things on behalf of the empire he worked for. So he drinks to cope with it. Him coming to terms with these things defines his entire character arc. Just wasn't sure if it was cheesy or overdone. He is kind of Bojacky...

    What are you Reading Now?

Reading Dune for the first time. I know. I'm ashamed.

How can gods maintain control of their avatars across dimensions?

Maybe you can use some kind of focus item that acts as a transceiver. This will solve that issue and give the avatar a flaw to counterbalance its godlike powers. Kind of like a lich's philactery. It'll add characterization to the avatar too. What sort of object would they choose as their...

    Unredeemable Tropes

How about a self-loathing protagonist? I know its been done before but I want to make sure its not been overdone.

    Designing religions

Alister Crowley right? I'm definitly going to look more into that as well.

    Designing religions

I'd say a general history, a basic set of customs/rites and core beliefs at the very least.
