blog A Quick Guide to Worldbuilding Cultures

I was once part of a group that talked about "western culture" or "American culture" but all their characterizations were guided by the thought, "What are all the things wrong about the culture we live in." I found this sight, http://www.bu.edu/isso/files/pdf/AmericanValues.pdf?scrlybrkr and...

    Cursed or Blessed?

Is the crux of the question, is a blessing something that makes you happier or stronger. Lol, I makes me think of Conan's response to the question, "What is good."

Why do you want to build a world?

This is really interesting. I would have never have guessed that this could have been someones experience. A modern example of someone being visited by the muse.

    Looking for worldbuilding partners

This is the kind of thing I have been looking for. I would at least like to have a conversation about what you have so far and I would like to hear the things about the world that are important to you. I think the conversation would be helpful even if it just happened once, but if I see a way...

How do I avoid grimdark in my writing?

What stories, or movies do you like that are not either grim, nor dark? What attracts you to them? I wonder if just giving yourself a bit of time to ingest some of the kind of stories you like that have a different tone may inspire you in a different direction.

Why do you want to build a world?

When I hike in the foothills I like to anticipate the feeling of wonder and fear at seeing a dragon fly over head; or suddenly running into a elf in the woods.

Why do you want to build a world?

My understanding of Tolkien is that his original impetus for writing his stories was to that he wanted a people who spoke the language he had devised. He had many other reasons for writing and his relationship with his stories was complex. It is in light of this that I ask this question. What...

    What Are You Playing Now?

I recently played through Outer Worlds and now Pillars of Eternity. I am interested in how Obsidian is inserting itself in the space left by Bethesda and Bioware. I was struck by how many fragments of writing went in to Pillars of Eternity in the "soul reading" your character can do. At...

    A Study of Tolkien

There is a paper back book called A Tolkien Reader that has his famous essay "On Fairy Stories" and a short story called "Leaf by Niggle" I found that both of these things gave me a glimpse into how he conceived "sub-creation" or what is often referred to as world building. You may already know...

    What are you Reading Now?

I recently started studying modern poetry. As I meditated on T.S Eliot and Yeats, I realized that I should go back and read the foundational texts. I am already familiar with the Hebrew scriptures, from of narrative and poetry perspective, so now I am going back to the Iliad. I do a good bit...

    An aspiring poet

Hello everyone, I am grateful for you all. I am looking for inspiration, support and friendships around all things imaginative and creative. I don't look to write or do any world building myself, at least not yet, but I want to find ways to grow as a poet. I want to discover how other people...
