I have always been an avid reader, and started writing my first book at age 13. My parents did not approve of my age innapropriate novel, and I gave up on my dream, then forgot about that dream as I pursued other interests, such as music and art. Many years later I was reading a truly atrocious novel, and thinking to myself "pshhh - even I could write better than this!" to which another voice in my head responded "why don't you then?" And since I always do what the voices in my head tell me to - I decided to become a writer. I started and gave up and started again, never able to get past a few pages of any story. I continued to plod away ineffectually, tinkering with various stories but never making much progress. Then I awoke in the middle of the night with a story idea burning a hole in my brain, and I have been crafting a world around that idea ever since, setting down plot points and getting everything in place for me to actually write my first novel. I will be using NaNoWriMo as my excuse to springboard this novel.
