I struggle with this, too. I'm assuming in this case you're talking about a POV character and the need to describe their thought process through the narrative (as opposed to a non-POV character for whom you can "observe" body language and physical reactions).
Unfortunately, shock tends to come...
It's not weird at all.
I used to write linearly because I wrote in Word, and I always felt like it was a chore because you had to write the next scene and the next scene and the next scene, rather than whichever scene currently inspired you. Then I got Liquid Story Binder XE and started writing...
Amazon is also apparently very shady:
I don't know how accurate the latter is because I haven't looked at Kindle Unlimited myself, but I thought I'd pass it on so authors can double-check before signing up for a potentially damaging service.
I just did a quick google search for "ancient religious practises" (practices? I can never get that right >_<) because I'm interested in this, too, and came up with quite a few links about rituals, such as funerary rites. "Ancient religous rituals" comes up with a different set of links. It...
"Influence"?
Because you're essentially influencing the outcome, or someone else's reaction, by taking action of your own, be that diplomacy or bribery or blackmail or whatever.
Snowpoint makes good points. Too many of us are gamers accustomed to JRPGs where you drink a potion that temporarily boosts your defense against fire magic, etc. I suppose there's a precedent with phoenix downs and healing potions, which heal you permanently (until you get hit again), but...
It's nice to hear from someone who can give unbiased feedback to loved ones. I'm sad to say that my experience is the opposite, though probably 80% of that is my fault. I just can't take feedback from loved ones without wondering "are they being honest?" I think that's probably another reason...
I would try to forget about it, as CupofJoe said. One piece of advice I've heard is to never give your work to family or friends for feedback. Even if they're also writers, it's the very rare person who can review something a love one has written without feeling they should give only positive...
I'm not sure I'd buy that the effects are permanent, to be honest, but I could believe the rest of it. AFAIK, the effects of plants (toxic and otherwise) are either temporary, or permanent in a "whoops, they took a sip and died" kind of way. Herbal remedies (the closest real-world equivalent I...
It doesn't have to be tea, but you could use the scene as an opportunity to worldbuild at the same time. Show some of the culture around them, especially if it's not set in the real world. For instance (and bearing in mind I haven't done detailed research so I may be wrong on the finer points)...
How do?
I'm Emma, a writer of m/m romantic fantasy. It's been a while since I was a member of a writing community that wasn't centred on forum roleplaying, but I'm at a stage in my current trilogy where I kind of need advice in a few areas and I thought it would be nice to develop a support...
