I too think it's a fashion thing, and it's not at all surprising that the most fashionable section of the market will be one of the first areas to make the switch.
I vote for the first one. It seems to capture a mood, while the second (the red one) is more abstract. It looks more like the cover for a school book to me.

If your background is a modern day American city, perhaps the character should be the focus. Is the character some kind of magic user? Perhaps have the character showing off their powers.
