need a name for a town

You could look up the names of towns in Norway, pick one that sounds interesting or kind of funny, and Anglicize it. Sandefjord could become Sanderford, Larvik could become Larvick, Haugesund could become Hoggeson, and so on.

need a name for a town

That could be the nickname for the local police department.

Romance scenes in fantasy: Love them or hate them?

It's not a dealbreaker for me providing that there aren't too many cheesy fantasy cliches and bad overheated prose. Err on the side of subtlety and understatement when it comes to that, is my two cents.

    fantasy hobos

Sorry to bump such an old thread, hope that's not frowned upon too much here. :o Home bum: homeless dude, stays in one place for the most part. Tramp: a bum who likes to wander. Avoids working, gets by on begging, schmoozing, etc. Hobo: an itinerant laborer who wanders from place to...

Reasons for War Between Two Religions

The first analogue that comes to my mind is the Protestant Reformation. Luther was considered a reformer within the universal Roman Catholic church; he didn't want to split from it, and there was this vague concept of "German Catholicism" at the time which he embodied. (I'm going off of faulty...

    Religion Systems.

It's hard for me to imagine it being "universal" throughout the world if by that you mean "uniform" or "centralized." However, in the ancient world there was significant blending. In 'Conquest of Gaul', Caesar routinely referred to Celtic gods with Latin names, for example referring to...

    Viking/Norse/Danish Accents?

I was in Norway last summer. A few times I ran into somebody with a somewhat thick accent, especially if they were over 30, but most people spoke better English than we do. The standard non-thick accent, there's definitely something to it but it's very subtle. Think of it as more lilting...

    Martial Arts Questions

It was an event in the ancient Olympics. Finger-breaking was an accepted move, IIRC. I heard one story about how after a long extended bout of grappling, one guy finally submitted. That was when they found out his opponent had died. He tapped out to a dead guy!

    Executioners

What about lynching and vigilante justice? I know that peasants would take it upon themselves to mete out beatings, mild tortures, and public humiliations (I read one bit about your neighbors removing the roof of your house if they thought your wife was too domineering). How much further might...

    Ask me about swords.

I'm going off of recollection here. I believe they found copper mace heads in Peru. Also, there were the Tlingit (Pacific Northwest) daggers that were made of copper. They would row out into the water and plunge it into the backs of swimming young moose. Living Landscapes I've also...
