I think it's laziness, yeah they may be overused but if you can add a few tweaks here and there, they might just work. I personally avoid using your generic fantasy races and I've decided to come up with my own :)

Dreams shall play an important role in my story too, my main characters experience very vivid, bizarre dreams that they struggle to distinguish from reality and fantasy.

We must remember that if we use words that are completely unheard of like in this case, those new words you've been learning then people are going to have to read a dictionary as well as your writing simultaneously. Think about it.

My magic is mystery, spirit and pizazz rather than fire or deep-freeze. The magic in my story shall have something to do with the soul, a planet (yet to be named) and fireflies... Though fire-ball throwing and what not shall be included in my world, the main focus for magic is the mystery of it.
