Greetings from a kinda cozy, kinda upmarket fantasy novelist

I do. All of us commit to reading and providing craft feedback, even if the genre isn't our thing (e.g. I'm not a huge horror fan.) Those readers tend to not comment on the world building aspects as much, but they absolutely can speak to interiority, story & character arc, etc. I think sometimes...

    Greetings from Dahygu

Your journey resonates with me. After years of writing non-fiction for work, I've moved cross-country, simplified my life, and begun writing fiction again. It's been wonderful to do! Hope you're having the same experience.

Greetings from a kinda cozy, kinda upmarket fantasy novelist

For my speculative fiction group? Too many, lol, somewhere around 18 people. In the summer it slims down to about 10 of us. 2-3 writing SciFi, 1-2 writing horror, the rest writing fantasy. We meet bi-weekly. For my other writers group, there are six of us, one a published fantasy author whose...

Greetings from a kinda cozy, kinda upmarket fantasy novelist

I do write everyday. NaNoWriMo 2011 helped me break free of never finishing anything. Disagree with Goldie's 3rd rule, in part because I'm not a writer who solicits feedback every 500 words and never develops independent judgment. I take a chapter or two through a few revisions until I feel like...

To map, or not to map?

I have a map I built on Azgar's that I like to use for reference. It's just part of my little world-building bible I keep handy to remind myself of things I forget. For me, it's super-easy to lose continuity from one chapter to the next without this kind of reference.

How do you feel about the 'classic' villain monologue about their plans?

I find it interesting to see the interiority advance the plot, foreshadow, build relationships, or create dramatic irony while revealing character. So when providing feedback to another writer, I always ask this question about monologues (villain or not): Does it move the story forward in an...

    Fiction vs realistic

I like to write across multiple genres. I'm currently working on a cozy mystery that is a bit upmarket, a fantasy that sits somewhere between high and cozy fantasy, and another that is more fabulism/intrusion fantasy, and some literary fiction. I like all of these genres, and find that I tend to...

    Search function?

Hello! Do the forums have any kind of search function, where we might look to see if questions we have or topics we are interested in might already be out there somewhere?

Greetings from a kinda cozy, kinda upmarket fantasy novelist

Hi Everyone, I'm happy to be here. I am currently writing a fantasy novel about a mage who'd rather be an herbalist. She's on the run from the Mage King who doesn't want her to quit working for him, and she encounters pirates and other such people on her journey. I've been having a lot of fun...
