I wrote my first fantasy story in my fifth grade language arts class for a class assignment. My teacher at the time required us to read it to her in private. I hardly knew how to type on a computer, so my story was hand written in a college rule notebook. While the requirement was simply to write a two page story, I fell so deeply into the small world that I had created, that my story ended up nine pages long. I began to read aloud my story. About a page and a half in, I became starkly aware that my classmates had turned their attention to me. The room was very quiet, and my ears were burning. My teacher told me I had something that not a lot of students possessed, and that I should chase it.
The same thing was told to me by my high school English teacher. I handed in a massive writing project for my honors final, and he left a note on it that said, "never stop writing." Again and again I was told these exact words, and what did I do? I stopped writing.
It's been four years now. I am 24 years old. I just got out of six years of wildland firefighting, and I am connecting back to a part of myself that I thought was lost. I am writing again. I am excited! I will never stop writing.
