I didn't explain my question very well I don't think. Rather than suggesting 'wands' literally, I just meant it as a metaphor for formulaic magic (i couldn't resist a bit of alliteration, as is always my downfall -> 'Will or Wands').

I came across ideas to do with crystals too (I think from Atlantic mythology- another ever cool hobby of mine). Suppose there is no such thing as an original idea, just original takes on them. Thanks for taking the time to comment :)
In my world, magic is quite a central part to the story. I think that it's one of those things that most of us love as children and can't resist as we get older- it's wondrous and dramatic (and who doesn't love a little drama).

I can't help but love a good map. While I'm not so much into the over-detailed map that shows each individual footprint of the character's journey (I'd like to think I'm clever enough to work out where the character without the author needing to hold my hand) but I think a nicely laid-out map...
