Intro

Hello all. I’m excited to be a part of the community. I’m a new unlearned writer. I’ve written two short stories and started a series of my own.

Good to have you here.
Every journey started with a first step.
And I do think this site is a good first step.
Leap on in and enjoy.

A group of children/young adults who are brought into a parallel world, their discoveries of the magical world they find themselves in and the classic battle of good vs evil

Ah, a classic portal fantasy setup. Will your characters have difficulty living on Earth again after all of their experiences, or is the actual journey going to take centre stage?

Hello I'm Vaeloria Starcrest. that is the pen-name I plan to use. have to get use to being called that. I am currently writing chapter four in the book that I'm planning on publishing. though I know a lot of publishing house that are real (traditional) don't care or don't allow AI assist so I know already that it's going to be hard. I've thought about self publishing but that's beyond expensive so I am going to have to really look at the Traditional publishing houses. and hope I can find one that is alright with me have a AI assist. (I use ChatGPT). Anyways thank you for letting me ramble a bit.

Hi Vaeloria! Welcome to Scribes.

I've thought about self publishing but that's beyond expensive
Just to put it out there, but this isn't true. You can indie publish a novel for free. Write your manuscript, design your own cover, go to Draft2Digital, upload it there, hit publish. Free. No money involved in the whole process.

Now, does this mean you should publish for free? No, I personally don't think you should. The minimum you need to spend is on a professional cover. People still judge books by their cover, and the better it is, the higher your chances of people buying it. However, there are fairly cheap, pre-made covers out there. Around the $250 mark. For a better fitting and higher quality one, you're probably spending between $500 and $750.

But that's about it. The other major cost usually is editing. However, if you find a handful of beta-readers, you can already cover a large part of their feedback. It just takes more time, since the best way to find beta readers is to beta-read yourself for other authors. For proofreading, you can use a handful of (online) tools to get most of the way there. Or if you want to spend a bit of money, you could try a tool like Sudowrite (we're having a discussion on it here: https://mythicscribes.com/community/threads/ai-as-editor.26834/ )

So no, self-publishing is cheap. It's about the cheapest possible way to start a business. However, that doesn't mean it's easy. Getting anyone to actually buy your book is hard. That takes time and effort and probably money.
