I am the guy who took multiple stabs at trying to solve the first six or eight steps of a modified version of the 'Drake Equation' using the best available data. Verdict: within 50 parsecs (roughly 165 light-years), there might be 4-6 Earth-like worlds and maybe triple that number of marginally habitable planets. This does not mean 'worlds with sapient aliens,' merely worlds with life.
I included one such marginal planet (Dagon's World) in my 'Empire' series, and much of the current WIP is set on another.
I have a copy of Stellarium on my laptop
It lets me look at the sky, run forwards and backwards in time and show important event.
One of the other things it does is show the constellations. Not just the ones we probably know a few of in the west but from a large number other cultures.
Other than that, I watch the Sky at Night.
