Akuma in D.Gray Man are demons – that is what their name literally means. But they are also so much more than that.
Akuma, as explained by the Millenium Earl, are representation of everything ugly in the human heart. Sadness, despair and hatred are what bring forth the akuma, and also what the akuma represent. And as his creations, akuma also represent the Millenium Earl himself. But the Earl cannot create an Akuma all on his own: he needs to trick grieving person into calling back his (or her’s) loved one’s soul, thus making said person an accomplice in his own destruction.
